May 21st Starfinder
« on: May 02, 2018, 04:40:18 pm »
Welcome to the Paizo Haus Blend. Java Game Haus will be holding Paizo Organized Play games on the first and third Monday of the month. If you've never visited Java before or if it's been a while, be sure to look at the "About the Store" section of this post and read about the store's rules and policies. Especially read Java's policy on table fees and discounts for roleplaying games.

May 21st Announcements:
Good turn out last week for a first event, but let's see if we can get more! Remember that GMs get store credit for running and if we get a consistent group of players we might look at running weekly events instead of bi-weekly. Doing an AP in campaign mode is on the table as well, but let's get our ducks in a row first.

New Players:
We will have pre-generated characters and Paizo numbers on hand. If you would like to make your own character, please come in 1-2 hours early for help, or see the resources below for how to make your own at home. If you play a pregen you will get a chronicle sheet that you can apply to your own character, so you will still get credit for playing. This character doesn't have to exist yet. If you decide that you would like to play in higher level game, just choose a pregen that can play in the tier or sub-tier, like the 4th or 8th. You will get credit as mentioned before, but you will not get credit til the character you create hits the level you played at. If you have any more questions feel free to contact us or talk with your Store's Liaison (Anna/Snowcat).

Paizo.com is where you will make an account and register a character. For detailed instructions on how to claim a Paizo number given at an event, click here.

Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide has all the information you need for playing Pathfinder Organized Play, how to make your character differently from a home game, and special rules and cool things in Pathfinder Society games.

Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide has all the information you need for playing Starfinder Organized Play, how to make your character differently from a home game, and special rules and cool things in Starfinder Society games.

Signing Up:
When you ask to sign up for a spot we would like some info. We need your first name and which scenario you would like to play. If you know what your Class and Level will be, we'd like that too, but otherwise we'll play it by ear. Sign-up is first-come-first-serve, but there will be sign-ups across multiple sites. These forums will remain the only place where people can sign up for a particular scenario, and anyone who claims a spot here will have priority at the table they asked for. Otherwise, the remaining seats will be filled by people who registered on Facebook or Meetup, then by walk-ups.

*** Please remember to bring your reference materials. Chronicle Sheets and ANY book you are using a race, feat, spell, or item from are needed if they're not the Core Rulebook. PDFs are legal as long as it is watermarked with your name and email, which shows that you purchased it from Paizo's website. You can have these on a phone or tablet. If you do not have your reference material on hand then your character and/or item, spell, etc. is not legal for play. The exception to this are the pregens. You will be offered a pregen instead so you can still play and get credit for what you signed up for.

About the Store:
Java Game Haus is a boardgame cafe with a few rules you may not find at other game stores. Please be sure to read these if you aren't familiar with this location.

  • No outside food or drink. This is a hard rule. Java is a cafe with coffee, smoothies, and canned beverages, as well as pastries, sandwiches, and flatbreads. If you don't want to eat at the store there are fast food options nearby, but Java has $9.99 and $12.99 Eat-n-Play options that come with food, any drink, and pay for your table fees if you're so inclined.
  • Table fees are $3 for RPG players. GMs don't need to pay, and organized play GMs receive $2 in store credit for each player at their table. For multi-table game nights, we tally up the total players and divide the store credit amongst the GMs present. All GMs and RPG players get 15% off RPG supplies the day they play. And YES, the table fees are added towards the Paizo Retail Incentive.
  • No swearing or foul language.
  • Retail Incentive Receipts only count when paid with cash or card, not store credit. If you pay some with store credit and some from your wallet, the portion paid by yourself will be counted.

Event Time: 6pm - 10pm

Event Code: 551,358

Table 1

The Half-Alive Streets  #1-10  Tier: 1-4

The PCs take part in an investigation after an Absalom Station pawnbroker tries to sell the Starfinder Society a lethal biotech augmentation. The search leads into the depths of the station's Freemarkets and into another investigation initiated by AbadarCorp. With rumors abound of mysterious disappearances near the Freemarkets and that those people using the augmentations are suffering from a mysterious illness, it falls to the PCs to piece together what's going on. Where is this never-before-seen biotech coming from, and what happens when the augmented dead don't stay dead?

Table 2

Fugitive on the Red Planet  #1-02  Tier: 1-4

Theft cannot be tolerated, especially when the culprit is a former Starfinder! The PCs travel to the red world of Akiton, hot on the heels of a deserting Starfinder who stole a magical relic from the vaults of the Lorespire Complex. Things get complicated when they discover what should be a dreary town in Akiton's wastelands is now positively jubilant. Could this revelry, not to mention the re-opening of town's formerly defunct mining operations, be related to the wayward Starfinder?

I can do 1-02, Fugitive of the red planet or 1-10, Half-Alive Street. Both have no starship combat.

Either sound good. I've heard good things about 1-10, though we might get a better feel for what the crowd would like this coming game night. I may run either 1-00 "Claim to Salvation" or 1-05 "The First Mandate". I predict my new character will be a GM baby so here goes I guess, lol.

hi, I'm completely new to starfinder and am interested to check it out. I don't know what class would be best to play let alone what scenario I want to participate in. Showing up early to get help making a character isn't really an option for me because of work and the commute during traffic to make it to Java, and using a pregen in (what seems to be) a complex rpg defeats the purpose imo. I don't mind diving in and making a character on my own, but getting some advice on what would be a good pick to have a well rounded party (and maybe a little easier on a new player) would be much appreciated as it seems this doesn't have that many players in the area yet. I signed up on meetup.com, but just a heads up: when I searched "starfinder" or "starfinder society" nothing comes up. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Erazimus: I would still suggest playing at least one game as  a pregen to get a feel for the game and maybe understand what character you want to create.

Hey Erazimus! I believe we talked in the store. If I'm not mistaken, you played at our first event. Welcome to the forum! Your question is completely understandable and it's a really similar process to how I approach games as well.

For a good class to make for a first character I would recommend the Soldier class. It's not just a straightforward class, but it's typically needed at tables. Starfinder is a combat oriented game at the end of the day, so DPS and tank characters are always nice. This is especially true when people tend to gravitate towards the magic or skill based classes and neglect having a meat shield to protect them. The soldier is also one of my favorite classes, though. It's fun with simple priorities, but there are a lot of ways you can build them. You can have melee focused soldiers that rush in and wreck face, or you can build a soldier that specializes in rains of bullets. My first soldier character was a grapple specialist, which led to hilarious results.

If being prepared is important to you, though, don't be afraid to make more than one character. Many times at our more crowded events we end up shuffling players around to make room for walk ups. Right now I have 7 Starfinder Society characters, and an eighth is coming up once I think of a name. Let me know if you have any questions during your character creation process and thanks for playing :)

I'd totally be up for joining either table, leaning towards table 1.  1st level Mystic, Andrew M.
